Thesis title in Musical Interpretation and Composition: « Physiologische Untersuchungen zu Atemstrategien beim Klarinettenspiel » (defense on June 26th 2026)

 

    As part of his PhD thesis, Yannick Trares, a PhD student at the GLAREAN College, is giving a graduation concert dedicated to works directly linked to the theme of breathing: pieces that are particularly demanding in terms of breathing technique, works that place breathing at the heart of their concept through elements of improvisation or noise, as well as two compositions by Professor Robert C. Bauer, written for Yannick Trares as part of this research project.

     This concert forms part of an artistic thesis project being carried out at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, which examines pulmonary ventilation whilst playing the clarinet under various technical breathing conditions and offers an artistic interpretation of the findings.

Biography

     Yannick Trares is a clarinettist and conductor. Following his studies in Karlsruhe and Zurich, he has devoted himself to an intensive concert career in chamber music, performs regularly as an orchestral musician in professional ensembles, and teaches clarinet at the Steinhausen and Risch-Rotkreuz music schools, as well as clarinet and teaching methodology at the Freiburg University of Music. As a conductor, he leads renowned wind orchestras in Central Switzerland; he is also conducting research as part of an artistic-academic PhD programme at the College Glarean in Freiburg-Strasbourg on the topic of ‘Investigations into the respiratory physiology of clarinettists’. Lectures on the subject of breathing have taken him to various conservatoires in Switzerland and Germany, as well as to festivals such as ‘clarimondo’ at the Staufen Music Academy and the ‘NOVA’ Academy of the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble.
